Ten young adults under the leadership of three women and sometimes helped by schoolchildren, set up a food garden in a barren fenced region of the Nobuhle hostel in Alex. Trenches were dug, seedlings planted, seeds from Sakhata sewn and water tanks from Zozo donated and installed. Once the rats were deterred, the project went from strength to strength and provided organically grown food for gardeners, their families and others who bought the produce.
The community was taught about healthy lifestyle, diet, school lunches , menus and food preparation.
This was a pilot which can be repeated elsewhere The method was introduced by the Sakhe Isizwe team, to a senior citizens’ home in the neighborhood.
